Victory Nickel's Bear Coulee Frac Sand Project Exceeds API Specs

18.03.2015  |  Marketwire

Wisconsin Northern White resource dramatically expands overall NI 43-101 frac sand resources

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Mar 18, 2015) - Victory Nickel Inc. ("Victory Nickel" or the "Company") (TSX:NI) today announced very positive analytical results from sand samples obtained from drill holes on the Bear Coulee frac sand property located in Trempeleau County, Wisconsin. Testing shows that the 10.9 million tonne NI 43-101 Northern White frac sand resource exceeds American Petroleum Institute ("API") specs and that, on average, an exceptional 43% of the resource will report to the 20/40 size fraction. Northern White sand is highly-valued as a proppant in the oil and gas markets.

"Victory Nickel's strategy is to be the premier supplier of superior domestic Canadian and US Northern White frac sand. As expected, sand from the Bear Coulee property fits the bill," said Ken Murdock, CEO of frac sand subsidiary Victory Silica Ltd. "Victory Nickel now has Indicated NI 43-101 frac sand resources totalling 12.6 million tonnes of high-quality domestic frac sand at its Minago property in Manitoba and 10.9 million tonnes of premium Northern White sand at Bear Coulee, giving the Company the most comprehensive suite of frac sand resources of any Canadian publicly-traded supplier. These resources are in addition to the frac sand that we have been selling into the Canadian and Northern US markets since mid-2014."

The Bear Coulee land package under option totals over 300 acres in southwestern Wisconsin, USA. Based on the depositional model of the Wonewoc Formation, Summit Envirosolutions interprets a largely uniform quality of the frac sand within the confines of the property. The size distribution of the sand particles that have been sampled is consistent across the area of the property, further indicating a homogeneous resource. Potential for expansion of the sand resource on the property exists with additional evaluation and drilling. The very prospective Jordan Formation sandstone is identified on the Wisconsin bedrock geology map to underlie part the property - it has not yet been evaluated and, as elsewhere in the region, may provide an additional source of high-quality proppant sand.

The analytical results for roundness, sphericity, turbidity and crush resistance from four samples collected from the first four boreholes drilled on the property are tabulated below. These initial results obtained from the Bear Coulee Northern White sand exceed the minimum ISO 13503-2/API RP19C requirements.

Measured Specification Bear Coulee Result API Minimum Specification Comment
Roundness 0.74 0.6
Sphericity 0.79 0.6
Turbidity 30.8-50.1 250 Formazin Turbidity Units (FTU)
Crush Resistance 20/40 6K (average) To generate less than 10% fines
Crush Resistance 40/70 7.5K (average) To generate less than 10% fines

The analyses were conducted at FracTAL Laboratory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA for distinct quality parameters in general accordance with the standards of the ISO 13503-2/API RP19C specification, except that a CAMSIZER was used for grain size distribution analysis. The following tests were performed: gradations using CAMSIZER, Krumbein shapes (roundness and sphericity), turbidity, bulk density and crush strength.

About Frac Sand

Frac sand is a proppant used in the oil and gas industry as a part of the hydraulic fracturing process - a means of increasing flow to the wellhead. Frac sand must have particular characteristics including achieving certain levels of crush resistance, sphericity and roundness, and it is therefore a relatively rare commodity.

About Victory Silica Ltd.

Victory Silica is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company with a phased plan to establish itself in the frac sand market. In Phase 1, Victory Silica began sales in 2014 of premium quality Midwestern White frac sand from the 7P Plant by shipping partially-processed sand purchased in Wisconsin to the 7P Plant for final processing and distribution. The 7P Plant is well located in an area populated with fracking companies, its potential customers, and is within only a few hours' trucking distance of major oil play well sites. Phase 2, which includes the construction of a concentrator in Wisconsin, expects to reduce costs and assure security of sand supply through the control of a frac sand mine in Wisconsin. In Phase 3, Victory Silica has identified a site in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where it plans to build a larger frac sand plant to process and distribute both imported and domestic sands, including sand mined as a co-product of development of a nickel mine at the Company's 100%-owned Minago project in Manitoba.

About Victory Nickel

Victory Nickel Inc. is a Canadian company with four sulphide nickel deposits containing significant NI 43- 101-compliant nickel and frac sand resources. Victory Nickel is focused on becoming a mid-tier nickel producer by developing its existing properties, Minago, Mel and Lynn Lake in Manitoba, and Lac Rocher in northwestern Québec, and by evaluating opportunities to expand its nickel asset base. Through a wholly-owned subsidiary, Victory Silica Ltd., Victory Nickel has established a presence in the frac sand market prior to commencing frac sand production and sales from Minago.
