Commander Provides Exploration Update for Baffin Island

06.07.2010  |  Marketwire

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/06/10 -- Commander Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: CMD) is pleased to report that diamond drilling at the Malrok prospect on the Baffin Island Gold Project, Nunavut has encountered thick intersections of altered and structurally complex iron formation units in a number of drill holes that were drilled down-plunge and down-dip from gold-bearing iron formation intercepts drilled in 2004. Additionally, a second drill has now commenced drilling on the Kanosak Prospect. This is a new target area that has never been drilled.

Eighteen holes, totaling over 3,300 metres, have been completed on the Malrok prospect since drilling started on May 22. Four holes were drilled through the ice of Malrok Lake, three of which intersected the interpreted down plunge extension of the gold bearing iron formations first tested by drilling in 2004. The remaining holes were drilled on land-based targets to explore the strike extent and down-dip continuity of the iron formation units. Drilling in 2010 is being taken approximately 100 metres deeper than the previous campaign.

At least three separate iron formations have been intersected, including a previously undiscovered formation about 50 metres deeper in the section. The typical gold bearing iron formations, logged previously and currently, at Malrok consist of iron rich silicates with pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and occasional (erratically distributed) fine grains of free gold. Structurally-thickened iron formation units, further impacted by later structures and alteration, are favourable settings for gold mineralization in this environment. The presence of arsenopyrite is also very important as it is often closely associated with the gold bearing portions of the iron formations.

Mr. Bernard Kahlert, VP of Exploration commented, 'The iron formations intersected in this round of drilling demonstrates the combination of mineralogy, structural complexity and alteration typical of this type of gold setting. It is very encouraging to see significant structural thickening where we expected to see it and the presence of wide spread arsenopyrite.'

Samples collected from the first seven holes are in the laboratory. Assay results are expected in late July. Samples from the remaining holes are being prepared and will be sent to the lab when ready.

On June 25, one drill was relocated 40 kilometres east to the Kanosak Prospect, formerly known as the Hebert Prospect. The first three holes have now been completed. This prospect was initially discovered in 2007 and has never been drilled. Kanosak is a 300 metre wide, 3.5 km long trend consisting of gold bearing quartz veins and alteration, which remains open to extension. Channel sampling in 2008 and 2009 confirmed that gold values occur in quartz-arsenopyrite veins, the arsenopyrite bearing host sedimentary rocks and localized shear zones. Previously reported results included gold values of up to 9.32 grams per tonne gold over 5.87 metres and 91.06 grams per tonne gold over 1.6 metres.

The 2010 program is being funded by AngloGold Ashanti as part of the option agreement announced in September, 2009. The program is being managed and overseen by Mr. Alan Sexton, P.Geol., of GeoVector Management Inc. Mr. Sexton is the Qualified Person, as defined by National Instrument 43-101, for this project. The QA/QC protocol is being managed by GeoVector.
