Quadra FNX to Take-Over Mining Operations at Franke
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/15/11 -- Quadra FNX Mining Ltd. ('Quadra FNX' or the 'Company') (TSX: QUX) announces that Marineer Zona Franca S.A. ('Marineer'), the local mining contractor at the Franke Mine ('Franke') in Chile, has shut down all its mining equipment at the site due to financial difficulties. Quadra FNX has made the decision to terminate the contract with Marineer and take over the mining operations at Franke. The Company is finalizing the terms of the takeover of the existing mining fleet and is also progressing discussions with Marineer's key sub-contractors.
Quadra FNX currently has approximately two months of ore feed stockpiled at the Franke site and does not expect the transition to owner mining to have any material impact on production. The transition is expected to result in an improvement in operating efficiencies, and in turn is expected to have a positive impact on the operation's cost structure. The Franke Mine is expected to contribute between 35-45 million pounds of copper in 2011.
Negotiations with the newly formed Union at Franke are also ongoing. The Company has presented the Union with a final offer, and a vote is expected during the week of February 21st
