Rome's Don Luis Greisen-Porhyry Silver-Tungsten Property has a Great Address as Part of the 'Great Cluster' of Laramide Porphyry Copper-Molybdenum Deposits in Arizona, New Mexico and Sonora

30.03.2011  |  Marketwire

SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/30/11 -- Rome Resources Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: RMR) (FRANKFURT: 33R) is pleased to announce results of uranium lead dating of zircons from greisen-porphyry on the Don Luis Property, Sonora, Mexico. A Late Cretaceous date of 67.7 /- 0.6 million years (Ma, Fig. A1) was obtained by Professor J.K. Mortenson using laser ablation - ICP-MS methods at the Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research at The University of British Columbia. Don Luis, about 45 km north-northeast of Hermosillo the capital of Sonora, has the same age as deposits in the 'Great Cluster' (Fig. A1), and occurs at its southern edge. The 'Great Cluster' refers to the Laramide (75 to 50 Ma) group of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in Arizona, western New Mexico and Sonora (Fig. A2) that are remarkable because they define one of the richest copper provinces on Earth! This confirms-based on deposit type, age and location-the great address of Rome's Don Luis Property.

Recently revised geology of the Don Luis Silver-Tungsten (plus molybdenum, tin and copper) Property is in Figure A3. Three large greisen zones, each about 500 meters in diameter, mark an intense alteration and mineralization trend that is about three kilometers long east-west and a kilometer wide north-south. The Late Cretaceous date of the mineralization and porphyry at the deposit is here defined (Fig. A1). But another important feature is the unconformity that marks a mid-Tertiary (35 to 30 Ma) erosion surface or pediplane. This is of particular significance because surface leaching of copper at this erosion surface could have formed a copper-rich supergene-enrichment blanket at depth. This is supported by: (i) supergene copper enrichment zones at many of the porphyry deposits within the 'Great Cluster' (e.g. Cananea and La Caridad: Fig. A2), (ii) two 400 meter deep drill holes at Don Luis that were wholly within oxide-limonite cap rock marked by supergene, oxide silver concentrations, and (iii) moderate values of copper (commonly about 100 ppm) in red, earthy-hematitic limonite after sulfides at surface-features that often mark prior chalcocite-copper enrichment. Abundant 'brain rock' (UST-texture) attests to its hydrous, end-stage magmatic origin. Lithophile related tungsten, molybdenum and minor tin indicate a North American Plate basement contribution to the magmatic system.

APPENDIX A

Figure A1. The zircon radiometric date for the Don Luis greisen is 67.7 0.6 Ma. This Late Cretaceous date (red) plots with those of the Laramide magmatic belt (mainly 75 to 50 Ma) that characterizes the 'Great Cluster' of porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in Arizona, New Mexico and Sonora (Fig. A2).

Figure A2. The 'Great Cluster' of porphyry copper deposits (blue) occurs in Arizona, New Mexico and Sonora. The largest deposit occurs less than 100 kilometers north of Don Luis at Cananea (Mineral Park is geologically similar). Don Luis is within of one the richest clusters of copper deposits in the world!

Figure A3. Geology of the Don Luis Silver-Tungsten ( molybdenum, tin and copper) Griesen-Porphyry Property, North-Central Sonora, Mexico. The greisen zones (yellow), each about 500 meters in diameter, extend along a belt about three kilometers east-west and one kilometer north-south. Abundant 'brain rock' (UST-texture) attests to its hydrous, end-stage magmatic origin. Lithophile related tungsten, molybdenum and minor tin indicate a North American Plate basement contribution to the magmatic system.
