Alcoa Receives National Excellence in Brownfield Redevelopment Award
Alcoa has received the Phoenix Award Grand Prize for excellence in
brownfield redevelopment for the Company′s role in reclaiming a former
aluminum smelter in Oregon and returning it to productive use.
The award, presented during the National Brownfields Conference in
Philadelphia, recognized Alcoa′s Troutdale project as the top
revitalization project in the country. In February, Alcoa was named a
regional winner in the Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska region.
The Phoenix Awards are associated with the Phoenix Awards Institute,
Inc., an environmental and community service non-profit, located in
Mechanicsburg, PA. The finalists were selected by a panel that included
environmental professionals, government officials and business leaders.
The panel considers the magnitude of the project, innovation, solutions
to regulatory/social issues, and impact upon the community.
Alcoa, the Port of Portland, and FedEx shared the award for their
commitment to cleaning up and redeveloping the 700-acre industrial
property in Troutdale, Oregon. The Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park is
now owned by the Port of Portland and is the home of a FedEx Ground
regional distribution center that employs over 750 people.
Phoenix Award winners represent revitalization projects from each of the
10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions, and projects
having a special community impact.
'The Phoenix Award recognizes the importance of managing for lifecycle,
so when a production facility reaches the end of one use, stakeholders
work together to prepare it for its next phase,? said Kevin Anton,
Alcoa′s Chief Sustainability Officer. 'We are pleased that we could help
revitalize the Troutdale site in an award-winning way and help create a
better future for the community by creating jobs, investment and a tax
base.?
Mark Stiffler, Alcoa′s Director of Asset Management, said the Troutdale
redevelopment was the result of extensive cooperation among community
stakeholders.
'This was an amazing effort. Just five years after closure of the plant,
the site was ready for redevelopment. This award recognizes the hard
work, teamwork and collaboration between Alcoa, the port, the city of
Troutdale and regulatory agencies,? Stiffler said.
The remediation effort began in 1994, when the site was added to the
Superfund National Priorities List. The redevelopment included
demolishing and removing the 1.5 million-square-foot smelter and in the
process recycling 44,523 tons of steel, 4,117 tons of copper, 3,680 tons
of aluminum and 185,000 tons of concrete.
In addition to bringing in new jobs, the project improved the quality of
life in the area by adding new multi-use trails and improved local
roadways and intersections.
The Troutdale plant was originally built in 1941 by the U.S. government
to support wartime operations. The property was purchased in 1949 by
Reynolds Metals, which kept the plant in operation until 2000, when
Alcoa acquired Reynolds.
'This project shows that with effort and dedication you can take a
former plant site and give it new life, creating new jobs and improving
the quality of life in the area. We are proud of our efforts and the
impact it has had on the community,? added Stiffler.
