Mosquito Rejects Claims in Cumo Procedural Appeal of Comprehensive U.S. Forest Service Environmental Assessment

06.04.2011  |  The Newswire
Vancouver, April 6, 2011 (via Thenewswire.ca) - Mosquito Consolidated Gold Mines Limited (Mosquito - TSX Venture: MSQ) today announced that it has received notice that an administrative appeal was filed by the Idaho Conservation League and other environmental organizations regarding the Environmental Assessment conducted by the U.S. Forest Service for the CuMo Exploration Project. By rule, the Forest Service has to act on the appeal no later than May 19, 2011.

Mosquito has done a preliminary examination of the appeal of the U.S. Forest Service Environmental Assessment for the CuMo Exploration Project and found several claims to be inaccurate and without merit, improving the likelihood that the Assessment will be affirmed and the proposed exploration will proceed as scheduled.

"The Forest Service spent hundreds of hours of thorough and detailed scientific analysis in order to complete their due diligence on the Environmental Assessment. We trust in their finding that the exploration will result in few measurable environmental impacts, and in fact, will improve conditions over those anticipated under a 'no action' alternative," said Shaun Dykes, CuMo project manager. "In addition to the improved conditions anticipated by the Environmental Assessment, we heard from many residents of Boise County during the public hearing process and nearly 80% were in the support of the project with the confidence that our environmental practices were among the most stringent in the industry."

Among the inaccurate claims in the appeal:

Riparian Conservation Areas (RCAs) not adequate - The standard of 300 feet on either side of Grimes Creek, not only applies, but has been extended to 500 feet in accordance with Mosquito Gold's corporate standard.
Percentage of shade trees not adequate - The proposed area for CuMo exploration where any intermittent stream crossings may be constructed are at elevations, and in areas that contain few trees. No shade trees will be affected by any of the work.

Stream temperatures may be impacted - None of the CuMo exploration activities will impact stream temperatures, either directly or indirectly.
Allowing mine waste in RCAs - Any mine waste in the region would be a result of previous gold mine efforts in the 1930's. The CuMo exploration project would not produce any waste in the RCAs.

Increased sediment load in streams -- Mosquito's strict adherence to the terms of the EA and applicable permits will actually result in a decrease in stream sediment loads.

Additional inaccuracies, exaggerations and misleading statements will also be identified as a full analysis of the appeal document is completed.

Mosquito Gold expects the Forest Service to evaluate the claims in the appeal and to render a final decision within 45 days. "We've talked to all constituent groups in a process that started in 2008 and have remained committed to working with them throughout the process," said Dykes. "We're confident that our scientists, geologists and environmentalists have examined all aspects of the exploration and certainly the U.S. Forest Service has responded to this with a comprehensive Assessment that supports our methods."

The appeal is a fully expected tactic whenever mining exploration is proposed on public lands, and has been included in Mosquito's proposed work schedule and accounted for by their expert team of advisors in Idaho.
