Alpha Natural Resources Affiliates Recognized for Safety

ABINGDON, Va., June 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpha Natural Resources, Inc.

, a leading U.S. coal supplier, is pleased to announce that several of its affiliates were recently recognized for safety achievements.

The following Alpha-affiliated operations received the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association award: Brooks Run Mining Company, LLC for the Wyoming No. 1 mine, the Cucumber mine, and the Poplar Ridge Deep No. 1 mine. Simmons Fork Mining, Inc.'s Ewing Fork No. One surface mine was recognized in the surface mining category. The safety award for preparation plants went to Litwar Processing Company and the Camp Creek plant.

Operations acquired by Alpha on June 1, 2011, also received recognition. These include Marfork Coal Company's Allen Powellton mine, White Buck Coal Company's Grassy Creek No. 1 mine, Alex Energy's Edwight surface mine and Mammoth Coal Company's Mammoth processing plant.

The 28th Annual Meeting of the West Virginia State Council of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association was held at the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, W. Va. The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association was founded in 1916 to reduce accidents, fatalities and mining-related illnesses in the mining industry.
