Alcoa Partners with the Global Reporting Initiative to Develop the Next Generation of Sustainability Reporting Guidelines

01.07.2011  |  Business Wire

Company to Provide Expertise in Enhancing the World′s Leading
Sustainability Reporting Framework

Alcoa (NYSE: AA) is partnering with the Global Reporting Initiative
(GRI) to develop the next generation of corporate sustainability
reporting guidelines that will shape the way corporations around the
world define, deliver and measure their sustainability performance.

The GRI Guidelines, initially launched in 1999, are part of the world′s
most widely used sustainability reporting framework. Through this new
partnership, Alcoa will serve as a participant and sponsor of The Global
G4 Consortium, advising GRI during the development of the next iteration
of GRI Guidelines to help ensure they address the most important
challenges ? present and future ? in the corporate sustainability
reporting field.

'We′re pleased to partner with GRI and play a key role in evolving the
guidelines for comprehensive reporting in the rapidly changing field of
corporate sustainability,? said Kevin Anton, Alcoa′s Chief
Sustainability Officer. 'Alcoa is a leader in sustainable business
practices and this collaboration with GRI underscores our core belief
that weaving sustainability throughout the enterprise creates a
strategic business advantage for exceeding the expectations of
customers, shareholders and partners around the world.?

'Alcoa has been reporting on its sustainability performance since 2002,
and using the GRI framework since that time. Along with GRI and the
Global G4 Consortium partners, Alcoa recognizes the importance of
transparent and robust reporting, which allows a wide variety of
stakeholders to have a deeper understanding of a company′s economic,
environmental and societal impact,? Anton said.

'Alcoa will join other leading global companies to help guide us on the
journey to improve and develop the next set of GRI Guidelines,? said
Nelmara Arbex, Deputy Chief Executive of the Global Reporting
Initiative. 'Through the support of our corporate sponsors, G4 will
enable more companies to provide their stakeholders with robust,
relevant information about sustainability performance.?

The G4 Guidelines will be published in 2013 and will replace the G3 and
G3.1 guidelines currently in use by organizations around the globe.
