Rugby To Commence Comprehensive Exploration Program At Cobrasco Copper Project, Colombia Government Passes New Forest Reserve Extraction Resolution

07.02.2022  |  GlobeNewswire

Vancouver, Feb. 07, 2022 - Rugby Mining Ltd. ("Rugby" or the "Company") (TSX-V: RUG) reports that in April, it plans to initiate a comprehensive exploration program at Cobrasco, a large-scale undrilled porphyry copper-molybdenum system in western Colombia. Importantly, a community agreement and water permits are in place to proceed with the drilling, which is anticipated to commence in June.

Detailed exploration has recently been facilitated by a January 28, 2022 resolution with respect to the Forest Reserve Extraction process in Colombia. It enables mineral exploration, including drilling, to proceed without going through the onerous forest extraction process, a process that amounted to a land use change even before a project had proven to be viable. In addition, the Resolution provides a clearer and better focused process for future Forest Reserve Extractions in areas where the removal of the forest cannot be avoided.

The new Resolution provides that for as long as exploration does not require forestry use, removal of forest cover nor forest fragmentation, then it is no longer considered a change of soil use as is required for a Forest Reserve Extraction. To this end Rugby's exploration plan will be provided to the authority, specifically addressing the integrity of the soil and forest.

Yale Simpson, Rugby's Chairman stated, "Rugby acquired Cobrasco in 2013, with the intention to explore and develop it as a world-class copper deposit. The Cobrasco footprint is large, based on the mapping, sampling and geophysics completed historically. The 43-101 independent report* confirmed the potential of a large porphyry system, however, it firstly needs systematic groundwork ahead of drill site selection. Fortunately, we have an experienced team to undertake that program and have the community support necessary to proceed with haste. To say we are excited about getting on with the discovery process is an understatement."

Yale Simpson added, "It has been frustrating for Rugby to witness exploration successes outside of Colombia, especially the Warintza (Solaris) and Cascabel (SolGold) discoveries in Ecuador. Rugby has an equally rated porphyry target that has remained undrilled for +30 years. Many investors stayed with us over the years in the belief that the Cobrasco project would one day come to fruition, while others had written off our efforts as fruitless. Out of necessity we acquired a quality silver-copper project called Salvadora in Chile with drill permitting already in place. Now we can look forward to advancing both of these promising opportunities."

The Cobrasco Project
Colombia represents a "discovery gap" between major copper porphyry discoveries in Panama to the north and Ecuador-Peru-Chile to the south. Cobrasco was discovered in the 1980s through a German-Colombian Government ("BGR") regional stream geochemical program which identified extensive and strongly anomalous copper stream sediment geochemistry which defined outcropping copper porphyry style mineralization.

Mineralization is hosted by a sequence of felsic tuffs, proximal to and immediately west of the contact with a number of syenite to monzonite intrusives. Previous exploration by the BGR indicates potential for an enriched supergene blanket containing chalcocite after bornite, cuprite, malachite and native copper. Molybdenite was also observed. Alteration appears similar to other large porphyry copper systems where primary magnetite is replaced by hematite (martitization). Mineralized outcrops of stockwork quartz-bornite veining occur within the property. To date, no systematic modern exploration or drilling has been conducted on the 3,000 hectare property.

Community Engagement and Environmental Assessment
In May 2013, Rugby successfully negotiated a Consulta Previa (CP) access agreement with the Afro-Colombian Cocomacia Community who hold land title to the project area. This agreement provides a defined set of benefits to the community, including employment, social project assistance and regular payments while exploration proceeds. It has a duration of 10 years from commencement of exploration. The Company looks forward to working with the community and will clearly benefit from their experience in the area.

In 2018 the Company undertook an environmental evaluation of potential drill sites together with the environment technical group from the Department of Forestry. Multiple potential drill sites were relocated to satisfy Forestry Department representatives. Rugby also completed a hydrological study including a resistivity survey over the proposed drill area to verify the non-existence of aquifers to demonstrate that drilling would have no detrimental effects on water resources.

Proposed Exploration at Cobrasco
In Q2, Rugby intends to conduct systematic soil/rock sampling and an Induced Polarisation (IP) survey over the stream geochemical anomaly defined by the prior 1980's program. The presence of strong copper mineralization at the surface facilitates siting drill holes; drilling is scheduled to commence mid-year. To minimize site disturbance, the Company plans multiple drill holes from each drill platform, a recognised technique for drilling large porphyry targets in similar environments.

Paul Joyce, Rugby's Chief Operating Officer, and a "qualified person" ("QP") within the definition of that term in National Instrument 43-101, Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, has verified the technical information that forms the basis for this news release.

About Rugby
Rugby is an exploration company conducting "discovery stage" exploration on targets in Chile, Colombia, Argentina, the Philippines and Australia. The Company's focus is the potential discovery of a high-grade copper molybdenum porphyry system at Cobrasco in Colombia's Choco Province and the potential discovery of high-grade silver-copper-gold at the Salvadora Project in Central Chile's El Indio Gold Belt. Rugby also controls a large portfolio of gold projects and/or applications in Colombia which are moving through the process for title grant. We intend to move to expedite this process where possible.

Rugby benefits from the experience of its directors and management, a team that has either been directly responsible for world-class mineral discoveries or have been part of the management teams responsible for such discoveries. Prior companies under their management included Exeter Resource Corp. and Extorre Gold Mines Ltd., which held significant projects in South America. These companies were taken over by Goldcorp (Newmont) and Yamana respectively.
